Evolution of the Christmas Dress(es)
Yes, I realize that she has more dresses than the number of Christmases she's been alive for, thus far. We were blessed with three beautiful dresses from two of my aunts and our friend Mel last year. That made it extra fun!

O' Christmas Tree
Yessiree, I think our tree is the clear winner in this contest. Don't be too jealous, dear Readers. Next year, we plan to lower our lofty standards and will just get a REAL tree (ha, ha).
(For those of you wondering why we have a plastic potted plant as our tree this year, let's just say that the only live tree we could have for the holiday would be a Palm tree).

Cake Decorating 101
I have learned a thing or two about myself as a result of this challenge. First, it WAS a challenge (for me!). I've always wanted to learn to decorate cakes but I now know that my talents lie better along the lines of baking (and eating) the cakes. Both Mel and I decided we should leave the decorating to Joani.
Second, this class reiterated my ability to rebel. Our instructor, while a very nice lady, must be lacking taste buds on her tongue. She gave us a recipe for her frosting and encouraged us to use it for the class each week. Who knew that decorator's frosting is mostly made of Crisco? Bleck! I of course refused to follow suit and made several different versions of buttercream (Italian Meringue, French and Cream Cheese). While my frostings tasted yummy, real butter is harder to work with than the tasteless hydrogenated oil.
Here are a few pictures from the class:

Yes, I know Sunflowers don't actually "smile". We were practicing our writing skills. And the spiderweb cake? Not my pick, it was a Halloween themed cake. Since I don't like spiders I had to visualize "Charlotte" to make it through. The snowman cake is my favorite. It was the very last cake so I finally caved and used the Crisco frosting. Lesson learned is that I should have listened to the instructor. Even if the cakes tasted horrible, they would have looked nicer and I would have saved myself a lot of calories!
If any of you need a cake decorated in the near future, just let me know. I'll be happy to call Safeway, Costco or the nearest bakery for you.

Planning to be Random
1) I have a hard time being random.
It wasn't only that I'd already posted those quirks, I also just plain had a hard time coming up with random facts. I'm a "planner" by nature. I get paid to manage a team of project managers and large projects. What do project managers do? We plan. This request to share random facts has just reiterated my need to plan as I've had to ponder ideas for weeks now. Speaking of planning...
2) I really enjoy planning parties and surprises for others.
Coordinating events, including coming up with the details (a theme, decorations, and food) is something I truly enjoy. I much prefer to do this for others than to have it done for me. I think it's because this is one way my (limited) creative side can be exercised. Party planning does have it's downfall though because it often brings to light one characteristic that I struggle with...
3) I have a tendency to be somewhat of a perfectionist.
I can go detail-overboard. I don't expect perfection in everything, and try not to put that expectation on others, but I can be hard on myself in certain areas. The best example I can give is when I finished my thesis. Many graduate students have to do a number of re-writes before they are approved. Since I was so thorough in reviewing my drafts, by the time I presented, my graduate committee had no corrections. It wasn't that I was a genius, it was that I can be anal retentive. That leads me to another quirk...
4) Color coordinating is very important to me.
While I am far from a fashionista, "matching" is something I'm a stickler about. This crazy need relates to both clothing and decorating. Poor Mr. Wagner doesn't even attempt to pick out an outfit for our Little Miss for fear that it will not meet my color coordinating standards. However, being that one of my first memories of my husband-to-be was of him wearing a mismatched plaid shirt with striped shorts, his cautionary approach may not be such a bad thing. Speaking of my main man...
5) I had a crush on my hubby for a long, long, long time.
Ok, so this isn't new news for most of you. It was actually the same day that he was wearing the mismatched outfit that he first caught my attention. We were at a church picnic playing beach volleyball with a group of friends. The rest is history (about 7 years later!)...
6) I can be stubborn.
Some may think that I must be extremely patient to have waited for Mr. Wagner that long. In actuality, those who know me well can tell you it's probably more likely the fact that I can be a little stubborn (a quality inherited from my dear, sweet Dad). Once I realized that Mr. Wagner had the qualities God had laid on my heart for a husband, I knew he was worth the wait (so yes, I did have one very short season of dating someone else during that time but let me remind you again, I did have 7 years to fill. Elizabeth Elliot didn't even have to wait that long!). And...
7) I completely love being a wife and mom.
The wait was more than worth it. A day doesn't go by where I'm not reminded of just how blessed I am to be Mrs. Wagner and together, how incredible it is to have the joy of parenting our Little Miss. There are no words that could fully describe just how thankful I am for my husband and child. I'm so glad I have a lifetime to do my best to try to show them.

Ride 'Em Cowgirl
We hope you all had a fun, safe Halloween. We had a nice time at the Harvest Carnival our church puts on and enjoyed dinner afterwards with good friends. Mr. Wagner is back at the Carnival as part of the "clean up" crew. He'll be working hard for the next few hours! I'm sure thankful he is serving for our family. I think I'll ponder that thankful thought further while I go make myself a nice cup of hot Chai tea and sit under a cozy blanket (Love you Honey!).

Making Progress
Speaking of progress, have you heard the big news of the week? No, not that the financial bailout package bill finally passed...we're not talking about the VP debate and are definitely not referring to the Beavs loosing in the last minute to Utah by a field goal (argh). Put on your thinking caps. This is big news, people, we're talking B-I-G.
Drumroll puleeeeez...dah, dah, dah, dah...boom! The West Coast Wagners finally have grass in our backyard! Remember all the weeds? Well, some are still there but most are gone and are now replaced with our beautiful lawn! We obviously haven't gotten our landscaping completed and still have more to do however, I'm really quite proud of Mr. Wagner for all his hard work in getting the irrigation system ready and the sod down (thanks too to Fireman Jon for helping with the sod!). This all just days before the rainy season officially begins (did I mention I'm so not a fan of the rain?).
Since the rain appears to be here for awhile, the rest of our plans (flower beds, shrubs/trees, pergola, extended patio...) will have to wait. Next summer we should be able to show you the complete "After" picture of our backyard. I know you may be thinking it's taking us long enough but what would you have to look forward to if we showed you now? I know, the suspense is intense.
P.S. If you want to read more about the results of our first cake decorating class go here (No, my creation did not look quite that nice). Really, click on the link because you can also see one of my favorite pictures of our Little Miss (thanks Wally!).

Birthday Letter 2008
Dear Little Miss,
Today you turn 2 years-old, happy birthday beautiful girl! No matter what they say about the “terrible twos”, you are an absolute joy to both your Daddy and I. You still have the same sweet, gentle spirit that’s been evident since you were born. In many ways, I'd like to bottle you up and keep you at this age!
My Child, every day is a blessing with you. I love to wake up to your smiling face. I love that you are a “Daddy’s girl” through and through. I love your sweet smile, dimple and dark curly hair. I love watching your social and "girly" personality develop. I love the sound of your voice and am so excited by the new words you are speaking every day. Most of all, I love that you are a reminder about how much Jesus loves us. You are beyond our wildest dreams and are better than any gift we could have imagined.
You will always be our “Miracle Girl”. Satan may have wanted to take you the day you were born but Jesus intervened. He has an incredible plan for your life. I don’t know exactly what that looks like but I know without a doubt that God's created you for something very, very, special.
I pray regularly for you and believe that's my calling as your mom. I'm asking Him to make you into a woman who seeks Jesus first. I pray that He'll give you much love and joy in your life. I'm also praying that He will give you spiritual gifts of:
- Faithfulness (“For we walk by faith, not by sight,” 2 Corn 5:7; “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths,” Prov 3:5-6),
- Compassion (“Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world,” James 1:27),
- Kindness (“..Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those to spitefully use you...Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.” (Luke 6:27-31).
Finally, the verse God laid on my heart for you this year is: “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying “This is the way, walk in it,”” (Isaiah 30:21). May your ears always be attuned to the voice of Jesus and your feet ready to walk the path He has prepared for you.
I love you my Little Miss!
P.S. I’m hoping to start a tradition with this letter. The goal is to write each year on your birthday to share a glimpse of why you are so special and to let you know what God has been laying on my heart specifically for you.

Birthday Blessings, Buddies & Boots

We were honored by the turnout and hope everyone had a good time. The Little Miss was sure elated to have so many of her favorite buddies around! As you can see, our "shoe princess" was also overjoyed by the new pink ostrich cowboy boots she got from the Peltiers. She had fun modeling them the rest of the evening along with her new baby dolls. I know I'm biased but it was pretty darn a.d.o.r.a.b.l.e.

Pushing Daisies
While I am all for having a few "like" items in a room, decorating with a single, obvious theme is not my style (For those of you who like that sort of thing, I mean no offense. I've seen a number of very cute and tasteful theme-oriented rooms. My bias is focused on my own home). This phobia may stem from the fact that as I was growing up, ceramic frogs were everywhere in our house (was that really popular in the 70s/80s?). My view has also been influenced by the strawberry items that adorned the clothing store my mom owned. Whatever the cause, themes are something I've always avoided. Until now.
We recently converted our guestroom into a guest/playroom. Along with this change came the need to redecorate. I wanted something fun for our Little Miss and yet not too over-the-top so as to annoy our guests when they are visiting.
Mistake #1: As I was pondering the plan, I had the atypical urge to complete a craft project. I'm going to blame my friend Joani for this one. She's often doing amazing crafts. Since I can't sew beautiful quilts like her (I'm lucky to sew on a button), I decided I'd try a collage of sorts.
Mistake #2: I made the trip to a local craft store. After I recovered from the culture shock of entering into that abyss, I found just what I was looking for: colorful paper with a variety of complementary designs ("fabric"), a glue stick ("thread"), and a daisy-shaped paper punch ("pattern"). While it was simple to construct, my own husband and mother didn't believe me when I told them I'd made it (not too surprising considering they both know me well).
This picture alone didn't constitute the theme room. I fear I may have crossed the boundary when I ordered this from Potterybarn Kids (Mistake #3). It was in the same colors of the room AND had a daisy to boot so I couldn't resist (For those of you who look closely, yes, I could have made this too. As I told you however, the craftiness was fleeting).

I think our Little Miss is going to enjoy this new room. To all our future house guests, please accept my apologies in advance if the decor leaves you dreaming of pushing daisies.

Simple Ways to Save

A few money-saving ideas that we've been incorporating lately:
- Carpooling most days that both Mr. Wagner and I work, and on other days...
- Mr. Wagner has been trying to ride his bike to work a couple times/week, combining the commute with exercise.
- Eliminating "extended" cable several months ago. No more FoodNetwork, HGTV or TLC for me and no more History Channel for Hubby. It was a sad state around here at first but we've since adjusted well (though our movie rental fees have now increased which may be enough to justify a Netflix subscription soon).
- Buying fewer organic items. This has been the most difficult change for me. I'm still convinced organic is a healthy lifestyle choice and will continue to purchase the most highly recommended items to buy organic whenver possible.
- Decreasing my Dutch Bros. drive-by habit (speaking of "healthy"). I'm more of a green tea drinker now. There are still times at work that I crave coffee (and need the caffeine boost) so for the most part, I'm trying to stick to the free slime brewed at the office (with the addition of lots of flavored coffee-mate, it's not too bad).
These are just a few small steps that we've been taking. We could certainly do much more to be better stewards of His resources. In a way, I don't mind that gas prices are leading us to make choices that are better for our environment and I like thinking of ways to be more resourceful. I'm interested in knowing what others are doing as well.
How is today's economy affecting the way that your family spends money? Are you driving less? Traveling less? Eating out less? What, if anything, are you and your family doing to save more?

Holiday BBQ Fun
Happy 4th of July (a day late) from the West Coast Wagners! Like the decorations and beautiful flowers we had outside our house for the holiday?
OK, so I'm fibbing. First clue, those flowers are alive. In truth, we celebrated the holiday at a BBQ that Seth & Anna Marie Sanders hosted. As you can see, Anna Marie did a terrific job decorating for the day and the Sander's yard looked amazing with all the colorful flowers.

A Weekend To Remember
Since it was a scorcher, we had to take advantage of water activities. On Friday night, we met up with my Aunt & Uncle for a tasty dinner downtown. Afterwards, we all headed over to the city fountain where the Little Miss had a blast playing.
On Saturday, Mr. Wagner got up early for a mountain bike ride with the guys while the Little Miss and I went for a run near the river. Later that day, Mr. Wagner and Paramedic Jon took the kiddos to our neighborhood pool while....Janelle and I had a "Girls Day Out" at the Olympic Track & Field Trials. It was hot but well worth the heat. We had a lot of fun watching the events and checking out the Festival. We even managed to sneak in dinner out afterwards before we headed home. Thank you Sara for blessing us with the last minute ticket surprise! And thanks to our hubbys for babysitting!
It's sure going to be tough to top this weekend's events but summer is just beginning and we're going to make the most of it. And yes, we will eventually get back to these.

What are your favorite things about Summer?

Bring On The Berries!
Since Mr. Wagner is also a serious muffin connoisseur, I thought we'd share another favorite, a healthy yet very tasty recipe. Warning, there are a lot of ingredients in these but we guarantee, once you buy what you need, the leftovers won't go to waste because you'll be making these again. Enjoy!
Health Nut Blueberry Muffins
3/4 C all-purpose flour
3/4 C whole wheat flour
3/4 C sugar
1/4 C oat bran
1/4 C quick cooking oats
1/4 C wheat germ or wheat bran
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 C blueberries
1/2 C chopped walnuts (optional)
1 banana, mashed
1 C buttermilk
1 egg
1 T vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 12 cup muffin pan, or line with paper muffin cups. In a large bowl, stir together the dry ingredients. Gently stir in the blueberries and walnuts. In a separate bowl, mix together the mashed banana, buttermilk, egg, oil and vanilla. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry, and mix just until blended. Spoon into muffin cups. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes.

If Only I Had Known
- That we would both eat something bad the last day of our honeymoon and would be sick with "the runs" for the following month.
- That you truly are more mischievous than me (regardless of what anyone else might say).
- That our marriage would undergo the "in sickness and in health" trial so soon.
- That you'd say "incoming torpedo!" at the most inopportune time during my hospital stay.
- That you'd hold me to the "whoever is holding her" diaper changing rule for so long.
- That you really would have made a good attorney.
If only I had known, Dear Hubby, I would have said "Yes!" all over again.
Happy Anniversary!
Love forever,
Mrs. Wagner

Our Weekend Road Trip
We also had a nice visit with my great Uncle Bob before we headed home. We were surprised that the Little Miss took to him so readily, especially since he's a serious Dawg fan and a U of O grad.
We survived the long car-ride thanks to two amazing inventions, a portable DVD player and Baby Einsteins. What did our parents do without them? The Little Miss' favorite word is now "moo-moo!" (translation: "movie!"). I can already see it. When she's 13, she'll be expecting a bucket of buttered popcorn to go with it.

A New Hobby? I'm Not Yet Convinced
I am happy to report that we all finished, each a few minutes faster than we were anticipating. Jon and Janelle came in about a minute ahead of me. Their talent on the downhill sections was superior. I'm most proud to say that none of us were close to being last. Of course, we were much nearer to the end of the pack than the beginning.
While I'm very glad I did the race (thank you Jon for not letting the girls back out like we were tempted), I keenly remember thinking as I ran, "I like horse shows a lot better. Why in the world am I doing this? Hobbies shouldn't cause so much pain!"
Pain aside, I am going to keep on running. As for making racing a new hobby? I'm not yet convinced that it's logical, or even sane, to actually pay an entry fee to endure self-inflicted pain. Give me my horse and a colorful hunter-jumper course any day. And for the hills? I'll take my mountain bike, thank you.
(Joani and Janelle, You're not off the hook completely. I'm not giving up until at least one of you join me for a 1/2 marathon. No pressure. All excuses for why this is a bad idea are welcomed).
Jon & Janelle headed towards the finish line. I'm a "dot" higher up on the path
Check out my form. Paula Radcliffe would be jealous. The smile? Totally fake.
